Heisman vote closest in 15 years

12/14/2024
Jeanty Hunter

By Chris Marler

We were told for weeks that this Heisman trophy race was over. It was taken off the books in Vegas, and in the few spots you could bet on it the odds were at -2500. Meaning you could bet $100 on Travis Hunter to win and only win $4.

Hunter did win the Heisman, but as the voting showed, it was a lot closer than the experts and Vegas made you think.

Hunter’s 552 first place votes were 200 more than runner-up Ashton Jeanty’s. However the final point total for each was 2231 to 2017 in favor of Hunter. It was the closest race we’ve seen in the last 15 years since the Mark Ingram-Toby Gearhart finish in 2009.

Here’s a look at the closest Heisman trophy races of all-time.

  1. 2009 – Mark Ingram by 28 points
  2. 1985 – Bo Jackson by 45 points
  3. 1961 – Ernie Davis by 53 points
  4. 1953 – John Lattner by 56 points
  5. 2001 – Eric Crouch by 62 points
