Rantin’ and Ravin’: Carson Beck’s fresh start in Miami

People only go to Miami for a few reasons. Sun, partying, and to get away. Every once in a while there are some different, more unique reasons.

In some cases, it’s a fresh start after someone hurt their draft stock, lost focus, and gained an Instagram famous girlfriend, all in the span of a few months. That was Carson Beck’s case.

Carson Beck left Georgia for a fresh start. After four years in Athens, he was projected by some to be an early draft pick. That was despite a season where he struggled tremendously, throwing three or more interceptions in a single game three times a season.

He dropped from a potential top-ten pick and fan favorite to a target of fan frustration in just one year. His new relationship with TikTok star and Miami basketball player Hanna Cavinder played a role in that shift. Many blamed her and their relationship for his struggles, though that criticism seemed misguided.

Let’s also be clear that the relationship of a 22-year-old stranger is none of our business. It’s not social media’s business and it’s the last thing that should be brought up when discussing the on-field performance of a college athlete.

Sadly, that’s not the age we live in anymore.

Carson’s business turned into everyone’s business, and it has again with the recent news of his apparent split from another multi-millionaire 22-year-old.

Once again, I won’t comment on the relationship of someone I don’t know just because it’s trending on Twitter or fueling TikTok journalists and social media hype. It’s stupid and more than anything it’s super weird.

That being said, one thing I will say to him or anyone else involved—maybe it’s time for Beck to put the phone down and lock in a little bit.

I don’t care about Carson Beck’s decision making on Snapchat nearly as much as I do on the football field. It is a little concerning that both are starting to mirror each other and not in a positive way. Regardless, even though I may not care, NFL scouts and front offices will.

Beck has an incredible opportunity in front of him.

He’ll suit up for Miami and play in an offense that led the country in scoring and yards per game at 43.9 and 537.2. They also finished 3rd in the country in passing offense at 348.2 yards per game, while Cam Ward led the country in passing touchdowns with 39.

Perhaps most importantly, the competition he’ll be facing is a significant drop off from what he saw at Georgia. Beck faced six ranked opponents this season in 13 games under center. Miami played two all year. The SEC also had eight teams ranked in the top 50 nationally in pass defense. The ACC had one.

We all saw what Coral Gables did for Cam Ward. Now it’s time for Carson Beck to get out of his own way and let it do the same for him.
