In a move that has been widely anticipated, Texas has dismissed head men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello first reported.

Terry has been the head coach in Austin for the last three seasons, taking over in mid-December of 2022 after Chris Beard was fired. The Longhorns went 62-37 during Terry’s tenure, including three straight trips to the NCAA tournament and an Elite Eight run in his first season.

Despite the program’s success at reaching the postseason, Terry was still on the hot seat as February rolled on. The team went 6-12 in SEC play in their inaugural year in the conference.

In addition to a new head coach, Texas will also be looking for some semblance of stability with the hire. Rick Barnes held the position for 17 years before his time at Tennessee. Since he left in 2015, Texas has had three head coaches and will now be looking for a fourth.

According to Kirk Bohls of the Houston Chronicle, early reports indicate that Texas has either expressed interest or reached out to Xavier’s Sean Miller, Illinois’ Brad Underwood, St. John’s Rick Pitino, and Alabama’s Nate Oats. However, besides Miller, all talks have reportedly reached a dead end.
