This year’s tight end NFL Draft class is dominated by a few names. Penn State’s Tyler Warren, Colston Loveland of Michigan and LSU’s Mason Taylor are among those that sit atop the position. Teams that miss out on those names early in the draft can still land an impact player in this deep tight end class.

The New Orleans Saints could look to add a big middle of the field target for their future young quarterback, which is the anticipated direction for the team’s near future.

The better news is that such a threat would be available in the middle rounds as well, including Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson. The big-bodied pass-catching target gets a little lost in a very talented tight end class and could be a good fit in New Orleans.

Why Ferguson is a Good Prospect

The 6-foot-5, 247 pound tight end is a pure pass-catching threat with the chance to develop into more. He moves very well and averaged nine yards after the catch last year. With his frame, near 33-inch arms and over 80-inch wingspan, he has an expansive catch radius.

Ferguson’s Fit With the Saints

The Oregon product would join another former Duck, Juwan Johnson, as a pass-catching tight end option. He has the frame to contribute as a three-down tight end, but would likely start off his pro career on passing downs. If he picks up steam as a protector during his early career, he’ll carve out a premier role for himself atop the position quickly.

Draft Projection

Ferguson is projected as a third-round tight end, putting the Saints in position to draft him with either the No. 71 or No. 93 selection. Should New Orleans not invest in tight end earlier, Ferguson could make sense toward the end of day two.
