O’Neal, who will serve in a voluntary, unpaid role, joins the Hornets as his son, Shaqir O’Neal, transfers to Sacramento State to play under newly hired head coach Mike Bibby.
O’Neal, a four-time NBA champion and longtime NBA analyst, is the latest athlete to take on a GM role at the college level, following moves by Stephen Curry at Davidson and Trae Young at Oklahoma. Sacramento State is coming off a 7-25 season and is seeking to rebuild under Bibby’s leadership.
O’Neal previously served as a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings from 2013 to 2022.
