NEW ORLEANS, La. – After adding a large drafted and undrafted rookie class of 20 players and announcing a free agent acquisition on Monday afternoon, it was expected that the New Orleans Saints would have some departures in the coming days. The first of which took to social media to break the news himself.

Saints quarterback Ben DiNucci announced Tuesday morning that he has been released by the team. New Orleans was carrying five quarterbacks on its roster before this transaction, and it seemed like DiNucci might stick around at least throughout camp as a veteran mentor, assuming starter Derek Carr would be unavailable. However, the seventh-round selection from the 2020 NFL Draft has been released.

That leaves the Saints’ quarterback room populated by four passers: Carr, rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, second-year signal caller Spencer Rattler and third-year passer Jake Haener.

The Saints have also invited Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkars to rookie minicamp

New Orleans may not have Carr available by the time the 2025 season kicks off, and rookie Shough is expected to become the team’s next quarterback. But now, what New Orleans lacks is a veteran player in the room, assuming Carr will not be around.

There are several options that the Saints could bring in, most intriguing being former New Orleans quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, from the open market. A move like this would be wise in order to have a veteran leader for the position in the locker room. However, the Saints may feel that having former NFL quarterbacks at head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach may achieve the same goal.
