Arkansas tops Vols, punches ticket to College World Series

By Chris Marler
Lliam Doyle might be the best player in the country. A Golden Spikes finalist and a God on the mound for Tennessee, he’s looked untouchable most of the season.
Everywhere, that is except Arkansas.
Inside the Arkansas state lines, even Doyle turns mortal.
That was proven once again on Sunday as Arkansas continued to humble, not just Doyle, but the Vols in general with their 29th win in the last 36 games against Tennessee. This one was an 11-4 drubbing of the defending national champions. The 29th win was especially sweet because it punched their ticket to Omaha.
The scoring started in the third when Charles Davalan belted a two-run homer over the right field wall. An inning later, Arkansas loaded the bases and right fielder Logan Maxwell promptly unloaded them with a grand slam. The game ended, but the party at Baum-Walker Stadium was just getting started.

Arkansas had already seen Doyle once this season, lighting him up for eight runs during their mid-May series, which is the most any team scored against the All-American all year. Sunday felt like more of the same as Doyle lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs before Tony Vitello made a pitching change.
Arkansas will now make their 12th appearance in Omaha for the College World Series. They are also the highest remaining national seed still in the tournament.
