SEC baseball teams gear up for pivotal midweek showdowns

By Chris Marler
The Road to Omaha is well underway and 14 SEC teams will be looking to avoid potholes this weekend with midweek games. Tuesday and Wednesday will feature 16 SEC games, including 14 on Tuesday night.
Here’s what to watch for during the midweek games, so far.
STAT OF THE WEEK: Monster Milam and the K is silent
Baseball fans marvel at home runs, exit velo, and pitchers throwing over 100 miles per hour. However, here’s a nod to a stat not getting nearly enough love.
LSU SS Stephen Milam has started all 21 games for the Tigers this season. He’s had 75 at-bats through 21 games. That includes 88 total plate appearances. In those 75 ABs and 88 PAs, Monster Milam has just TWO strikeouts. That is incredible in this current era of baseball.

Most intriguing matchup
Arkansas is hosting Oral Roberts in a two game set on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Golden Eagles are only 12-6 so far this season, but don’t forget that they made a trip to Omaha just two years ago. They’ve made the NCAA Tournament in 20 of the past 25 seasons. ORU has also won the Summit League 18 times since 2000.
It could be a dangerous spot for the Razorbacks after a come from behind series win at Ole Miss and South Carolina coming in town later this weekend.
Bragging rights
Everything’s bigger in Texas including the bragging rights. Texas plays host to UTSA on Tuesday. The Roadrunners are just 16-6 and haven’t had a ton of success against high level programs this season. They’re 15-3 in their last 18 games, but are coming off a series loss to Dallas Baptist last weekend where they gave up 11 or more runs in all three games.
That being said, they are undefeated against the SEC this season. The sample size may be small, but UTSA did beat Texas A&M 7-4 last Tuesday in College Station.
In-state matchups under the bright lights
Most every midweek game this time of year is against a lower level in-state school. However, this week there are several big matchups against in-state opponents. That includes two being played on bigger stages in minor league ballparks.
South Carolina will play host to College of Charleston at Segura Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies, a Single-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Ole Miss will take on a top 20 Southern Miss squad in Pearl, Mississippi, former home of the Double-A Mississippi Braves. Both South Carolina and Ole Miss are coming off series losses in their opening weekend of SEC play.
