SEC Baseball Weekend: Chaos, clashes, and comedy

04/04/2025
Texas A&M Aggie Baseball

By Chris Marler

There are only two teams left in the NCAA Basketball tournament which means it’s, for all intents and purposes, baseball season. Here’s what we’re watching this weekend in SEC baseball.

Tennessee might break the actual spirit of Texas A&M this weekend.

If these two weren’t playing each other this would be one of those “ran into an old acquaintance and walked the other way.” Probably at a mutual friend’s bachelor party and they seemed nice enough but kept drinking rum and Cokes at the slot machines. He was the one who kept slapping your arm after a bad joke, but like way too hard.

Then, sent you political memes on Facebook for the first six weeks after the trip that were way too much.

These two fanbases interacting is incredible theater. Just a crowd of Ned Flanders looking cowboys and a crowd of dudes in overalls who say things like, “I swear if that guy looks over here one more time…” to no one after 11 Miller Lites.

A&M is in such an emotionally fragile place right now. And, Tennessee likes to bully for the sport of it. If the Aggies wanted to forfeit, I would honestly call it self-care.

Deep thought: Are we sure Ryland Zaborowski isn’t just Charlie Condon trying to play another year because he missed Athens?

If you thought Kirby’s defensive depth was elite, you should see the plug-and-play generational power hitters they have at Foley Field. He leads the SEC in batting average (.448), slugging(1.011) , on-base percentage (.579), and OPS (1.590).

He’s also second in home runs and RBIs, with 14 and 48 in just 27 games.

South Carolina vs Mississippi State relegation series

Remember that scene in Varsity Blues when the dads that all played 20 years ago would watch practice and talk about the glory days? That’s this series’ vibe in a nutshell.

These are two proud programs who used to be at the top. You can’t tell now because of the receding hairline and Skechers slip-ons they’re wearing. But, that dude used to be the man.

Not sure who wins this series, but I do know whoever loses it is getting locked in the basement with Missouri.

Another top-5 matchup at home for Texas. We see you, Sankey.

These are the matchups Texas got in their first year at home.

Does Texas have something on Greg Sankey at this point?

Who wins first–The Braves or Missouri?

Spoiler alert: it won’t be Missouri. Realistically, their next SEC win in a men’s sports might be on October 25 against Vanderbilt, in football.

Iron Bowl of Baseball

Alabama is one of two SEC teams still undefeated on the road. Auburn has lost four in a row. The biggest question is how many people will be in the stands with the basketball team in the Final Four.
