Texas Adds SMU RB Transfer

Just ten days before they open the season against Colorado State, Texas has added a transfer running back to its roster.
SMU super senior Velton Gardner announced on his Instagram that he is headed to Austin. He spent the past two seasons with the Mustangs, where he served primarily in a backup role. A three-star member of the class of 2019, Gardner spent the 2019-21 seasons at Kansas, where he played in 19 games. Gardner will take advantage of the extra COVID year after redshirting in 2021.
The Longhorns recently found themselves thin at running back after season-ending injuries to starter CJ Baxter and true freshman Christian Clark. Jaydon Blue is expected to shoulder the load as the most experienced back with 23 career games played. Sophomore Quintrevion Wisner and freshman Jerrick Gibson are also on the roster.
For his career, Gardner has rushed 229 times for 1,024 yards and six touchdowns.
