The tush push lives on and Saints, Kellen Moore could run it

The NFL has voted to preserve the famous “Tush Push”. Despite a reported charge by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to get the play out of the game, the movement to do so has again failed, at least for the 2025 season.

The play has been made famous (or infamous depending on your vantage point) by the Philadelphia Eagles who run the play to momentous success. Former Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is now the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Moore has not been shy about this support for the play.

During the Owner’s Meetings in April, Moore spoke with the media and made it known that he feels “very comfortable” with the play being in the league. The buzz phrase used against the rugby skirmish-like play has been that it is a “health and safety concern” despite no data to support the claim of risk, which Moore referred to in the same availability.

“There is no injury data,” Moore said. “Percentage-wise, the likelihood of converting on it is pretty much the same as every other run. I don’t see any issues.”

Turns out that enough of the NFL didn’t either. The vote, which initially failed in April, came up short again during this week’s re-vote. The proposal required at least 24 votes in support in order for the play to be banned and received only 22. However, support to ban the play is up from the 16-16 split it received in April when the initial vote on the matter was, ironically, pushed.

It seems the Tush Push is safe for 2025. However, its future beyond is murky.

Now the curiosity for many is whether or not the play will make its way down south to the Saints. Moore, of course, didn’t give up much ground on that idea when asked last month.

“I don’t know, we’ll see, he said. “Obviously, I think other teams have tried to replicate it and have not had success. … It’s a huge investment to execute that play at a really high level, and (the Eagles) put a lot of time and effort into it.”
