The Week 3 College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night, with several changes from the previous week. Georgia climbed to No. 10 after beating Tennessee. BYU finally flew too close to the sun and lost to Kansas, dropping Cougars eight spots to No. 14.
One of the main points of focus was how the committee would rank the two losing SEC teams and how high Boise State would climb. If Boise St. finishes above a Power Four champion, it would get a first-round bye.
Tennessee’s loss at Georgia proved costly as the Volunteers were ranked No. 11 and are the first team out of the field. The frustration from Josh Heupel talking to the media over the weekend about the strength of the schedule is more of a factor in the seedings. That being said, Tennessee has played the second easiest strength of schedule in the SEC, and they have the second-worst opponent’s winning percentage of any team in the Power Four at .420, ranking 117th in the country.
However, most of the debate centered around Indiana, Texas, and Penn State and their less-than-stellar resumés. How long is the leash for those teams if they slip and lose another game before Selection Sunday?
Four teams from the SEC and four from the Big Ten are projected in the top 12. Eight SEC teams were included in this week’s top 25, including five in the top 12. Here’s a look at the rankings.
