There are dozens of massive rivalry games today, but all eyes in the college football world seem fixed on one person: Lane Kiffin.
As fans, media and his own players are anxiously waiting for Kiffin to announce his decision on where he’ll coach next season, his former boss Nick Saban weighed in on some of the factors impacting his decision.
“I think Lane’s decision is going to come down to one thing: where is the place that I can recruit the best players? And I think one of Lane’s apprehensions is that he’s had to use the portal to build his team at Ole Miss each year,” Saban said. “At LSU, he probably could recruit better talent and then just supplement his team by need with the portal.
“That’s probably the dilemma that he has, as well as his loyalty to his team that he’s coaching now that he wants to be able to continue to coach. So it’s a tough thing to have the right answer to.”

The idea itself isn’t off base. It’s just a bit strange coming from its source. Remember, Kiffin served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator under Nick Saban. After Kiffin accepted the Florida Atlantic job, Saban dismissed him, the two “mutually parted ways,” with about 10 days remaining before the national championship. Alabama went on to lose that title game to Clemson, 35–31.
Still, the decision to leave for LSU versus staying to coach his team in the playoff isn’t as simple as it sounds.
Is it selfish for Kiffin to leave a team in the middle of a playoff run? Absolutely. But an administration letting him walk, and potentially derailing the best season in school history, isn’t exactly selfless, either. The entire situation has sparked nonstop debate and plenty of emotionally charged reactions from fans on both sides.
Whether he chooses Ole Miss or LSU is still anyone’s guess. But on the bright side for both fanbases and programs, at least you’re not Florida.
