ICYMI: Alabama Survives Iron Bowl, secures SEC Title berth

Alabama wins the Iron Bowl and will almost certainly make the College Football Playoff.

THE STORY

It was never going to be easy. It never is in the Iron Bowl.

It was another wild finish in Jordan-Hare, with all the pressure on one sideline and all the energy pulsing through a packed, haunted-house Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Alabama got out to a 17-0 lead and hung on for dear life. Something that seems to be a frequent issue with this Alabama team in the Kalen DeBoer era.

In the end it didn’t, the Iron Bowl delivered in Jordan-Hare like it always does. Auburn had more yards in the second half (284) than Alabama had in the entire game (280). They ended with 131 more yards than Alabama, but none of that mattered.

Auburn made all the plays they needed to make on offense in the second half and turned a 17-0 lead into a 20-20 tie. From there, with their playoff hopes on the line, Alabama marched 15 plays over 75 yards for the game-winning touchdown, draining 7:53 off the clock.

Alabama escaped with the win, their third straight victory at Auburn’s “Haunted Mansion.” They now advance to the SEC Championship for the fifth time in eight years, and the third meeting with Georgia in five.

THE STATS

6 – Alabama has won six straight Iron Bowls. It’s the first time in 50 years.

5 – Auburn will finish with their fifth straight losing season.

4 – Auburn had 4 yards more in the entire second half than Alabama did in the entire game.
