Michigan hires Kyle Whittingham which means the coaching carousel has hopefully come to an end
Instability and uncertainty run rampant in college football offseasons, and this season may have been an all-time example of that.
The first Power Four head coach was fired before the month of October even began. The number got up to double digits around Halloween, and like a Georgia football player driving at 3 a.m., it never slowed down.
In the SEC there were six job openings. Even crazier? As of Christmas, there are only three SEC quarterbacks returning for 2026 who will have the same offensive coordinator and head coach.

Most wild college football seasons are measured against 2007, the gold standard for chaos with a two-loss national champion and nine straight losses from the No. 2 team. If there’s ever been an off-field version of 2007, it’s this season.
On Friday, another major program announced a new hire as Michigan hired former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. The hire signified a lot of things. On top of being a phenomenal hire for a program facing their least stable offseason ever, it also signified something more comforting for programs around the country – the end.

It’s a long offseason every offseason, but as of Dec. 27, we may at least be heading into an offseason with no more head coaching changes. That allows SEC programs to exhale, with so many teams spared from further upheaval after countless league names were linked to openings across the country.
Just think about all the speculation and changes that were still potentially in play according to some.
Many believed Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer would be Michigan’s top target, with some even spinning conspiracy theories that such a move could eventually send Lane Kiffin from LSU to Alabama. That’s right, a second job offer and acceptance, from Lane Kiffin in a little over a month. While it was not very believable, with the way this offseason has gone, it didn’t seem impossible.
Figures like Tim Brando and George Wrightster were adamant that the first domino in that scenario was almost guaranteed to fall. Even Notre Dame found itself in the midst of speculation, despite their season being over. Their head coach, Marcus Freeman, saw his name tied to the New York Giants job, and as of today, they aren’t completely out of the woods yet.
No, there is only 1 3 LOSS team that always gets preferential treatment! End of story and you’ll lose the game and will be fortunate to keep your Coach. That deal signed yet? ….I’

It’s been wild. It’s been exhausting. It has also hopefully run its course.
It will be nice to have some stability, rest and news-free days ahead of us now that the coaching carousel has seemingly come to an end.
So enjoy it, because the transfer portal opens on Jan. 2.
