SEC Baseball Power Rankings: Point of no return

We’re past the halfway mark, and for many teams the direction of their season is becoming clear, whether it’s promising, concerning, or somewhere in between. Here’s our latest weekly power rankings for SEC Baseball following the sixth weekend of conference play.

1. Georgia

At some point this team should probably start getting national recognition as one of the best teams in the country. I know they’ve been ranked in the top five for most of the season, but we do not talk about Georgia the same way we talk about UCLA and Texas. That seems odd considering they are 13-5 in the toughest conference in America, and have a two game lead over second place.

The Dawgs blasted Arkansas out of their own stadium, hitting a million home runs on the weekend. Maybe it wasn’t actually a million, but the nine they hit on Sunday alone sure felt like it.

2. Texas A&M

Speaking of a million home runs, the Aggies have hit a home run in roughly a million straight games. It’s actually just over 40, but you get the picture.

Texas A&M is legit. They play really good baseball, swing the bat as good or better than most at the top of the order and pitch with a gigantic chip on their shoulder.

They’re 31-7 on the season, and have won five straight in the conference. That’s pretty damn good, guys.

3. Texas

I said earlier this year that Texas is basically a late 1980s or early 1990s MLB team. They don’t care as much about the long ball, even though they can definitely do that offensively, and they just dominate you on the mound.

This weekend was a perfect example of that. They took two of three from No. 11 Alabama and shoved all weekend. That included a Saturday game that clinched the series where they struck out 19 batters in the game.

4. Auburn

Remember this weekend and what Auburn has done up until now because the perception of them as a contender is about to be skewed. Auburn went to Florida and took two of three from one of the hottest teams in the conference this weekend. Now comes the fun part.

Auburn closes their regular season with Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Georgia with those two middle series on the road. They’re playing really good baseball right now, but finishing .500 with those remaining 12 games is a tall task.

5. Mississippi State

Nothing gets a team back on track like a weekend trip to South Carolina.

The Bulldogs swept the Gamecocks, and found themselves a little along the way. They had to battle in two of the three games, but it was a sweep that showed a ton of character for a Mississippi State team that kind of floundered over the last few weeks.

Now, the one they’ve had circled for a while is at hand. Mississippi State has a chance to bury LSU and do it in front of a home crowd that is ripe with anticipation. Also, Ace Reese isn’t human, but he is awesome.

6. Ole Miss

Ole Miss continues to be one of the best teams in the country that seemingly no one is talking about. They have now won five of their last six and just took two of three on the road at Tennessee.

The pitching has been really good, and they’ve continued to climb the national RPI and SOS rankings throughout the season. It will be interesting to see what they do in their next stretch.

Their next ten games are against Georgia, Texas A&M, Arkansas and a midweek game against Mississippi State. That’s pretty brutal.

7. Florida

It feels like this is where things start to fall off a little for the conference, in terms of legitimate contenders. Florida is still very good, and a series loss to a top-15 Auburn team is nothing to be embarrassed about. The loss does bring about serious questions about some of the games they have lost that should’ve been wins.

We’ve spent plenty of time talking about how bizarre their season has been, beating top-ranked teams while dropping games to opponents they shouldn’t. That inconsistency is likely to hurt them when tournament seeding rolls around.

8. Arkansas

If you’re reading this, Arkansas just gave up another home run to Georgia.

9. Alabama

Alabama is cooling off. Still, they’re ninth in the standings and firmly ranked in the top-15 to 20 of most every poll. It’s a testament to how deep the conference is.
