We’re in the final 24 hours of the portal window being open for college basketball, and several coaches are still fighting for visits, NIL, and most importantly, players. Here’s our latest update from the SEC basketball transfer portal.
By the Numbers
It was the busiest day we’ve seen in the portal in well over a week. With the portal window closing in the next day or so, the amount of players jumping in the portal should expect to climb dramatically as players weigh their options. That was evident on Monday as 29 players jumped in the portal and 51 players committed to new schools. The 80 players combined was by far the most activity we’ve seen since the first 48 hours of the portal.
As it stands now there are 1,230 players in the portal and 392 players committed for a total of 32 percent of the players. That’s up 4 percent from just yesterday.
Iron Bowl of Basketball participants busy weekend
Alabama and Auburn had busy weekends outside of baseball. Alabama hosted Morgan Wallen in concert at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and Auburn hosted their annual spring game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Each also got significant help in the front court.
Auburn brought in a 6-foot-10 PF from Creighton named Owen Freeman. Freeman didn’t put up great numbers at Creighton last year, but he was a former Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Iowa three seasons ago. Freeman is the No. 169 ranked player in the portal and will add immediate presence in the paint for Steven Pearl going into year two of his tenure on the plains. Again, Freeman’s time at Creighton was underwhelming, but he is a former 16.7 ppg big man at the Power Four level and was preseason All-Big East a season ago.
Alabama also got some help in the frontcourt. The team that shoots threes more than anyone else in the country had a massive deficiency inside last season, even with top 15 portal player Aiden Sherrell. They went to Boise State and got a center that perfectly fits their scheme. Drew Fielder played center for the Broncos last season averaging 14.7 ppg and 5.7 rebounds per game. Even better for Nate Oats’ squad, he shot 40.9 percent from deep. That’s a perfect fit for what Alabama wants to do offensively.
