After an unusual entry to the New Orleans Saints roster, being acquired via trade for while on Injured Reserve and unavailable to take the field for his year with the team, wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk is reveling in the opportunity ahead of him to finally hit the gridiron and prove his new team made the right decision.
We highlighted Polk’s appreciation for the opportunity earlier this week, but in extended conversation with the wideout, we found out more about his conversations with the team and the support system behind him as he looks to turn the team’s investment into him as a chance to contribute in 2026.
Polk spent his entire first season in New Orleans rehabbing and recovering from a shoulder injury that sent him to Injured Reserve while still with the New England Patriots before the trade came through. Upon arrival in New Orleans, the team’s message to the receiver was clear.
“‘Get yourself healthy, get your shoulder ready. Whenever the ball gets rolling, we just need you to be here and go out here and compete,’” Polk said was the team’s advice. “Obviously, nothing’s promised. I’m just going out there doing the best I can, and taking advantage of all the opportunities.”
He’s already started strong, but he’s not alone in the endeavor. Polk says he has a strong support system behind him that helped him through the recovery process and continues to have an influence while battling for a roster spot.
Polk had hoped that he’d get a chance to come to New Orleans coming out of college, but the timing of his arrival works out just fine for the Lufkin, Texas native.
“I’ve got a big support system,” he said. “My mom, my uncle, the mother of my child, my son as well. My son plays a huge role in everything too.”
It’s clear that Polk’s son is a big part of the “why” behind what drives the receiver’s pursuit and work ethic.
“Seeing him grow up,” Polk said. “He just grows each and every day. Seeing that little smile and him running around, that’s the best.”
Polk is one of several wideouts battling for what may only be a single roster spot left available at the position. He has the talent to earn it, but competition like Kevin Austin Jr. and others won’t make it easy. The former Patriots’ awareness that nothing is promised is important, especially when paired with the motivation he has at home.
His next steps are plainly to stay healthy and keep impressing. With a deep well of influence surrounding him, he’s off to a strong start.
