Julian Blackmon in line for breakout year in Staley’s defense

New Orleans Saints

A breakout season could be on the way for New Orleans Saints’ safety Julian Blackmon. His re-signing as free agency opened could end up being one of the more under-the-radar impactful moves of the offseason.

Blackmon is a noted ball-hawk and rangey safety that can help the Saints bolster their takeaway numbers in 2026.

The question for him has often centered around health. If he is set for success in that area of the game this year, his fit in defensive coordinator Brandon Staley’s system could propel him to new heights.

Turnover Generation

Last year, the Saints tallied 20 total takeaways over the season. They finished ranked a respectable No. 15 in the NFL in the metric. However, with only 10 interceptions, they just barely missed being among the 10 teams to secure single-digit interceptions on the year.

New Orleans can use a boost in exactly what it is that’s been Blackmon’s calling card throughout his entire NFL career: creating takeaways.

Blackmon’s Production

Blackmon has tallied four seasons in which he’s appeared in double-digit games. Over those four years, he reeled in an impressive 10 interceptions. His career-high was four in 2023.

Four interceptions may not sound very inspiring, but in today’s NFL, where interceptions are down, it would be an impactful season for New Orleans.

That count would have led or tied for the lead in Saints interceptions in each of the last eight seasons. New Orleans hasn’t had a single player amass five in a year since cornerback Marshon Lattimore did so in 2017, his Defensive Rookie of the Year season.

Aided By New STAR Defender

In Staley’s system, especially now with safety Jonas Sanker appearing to fit in as the STAR defender, Blackmon would be asked to play a roaming safety role, which would be comfortable for the veteran defender. The responsibilities would put him in position to rely on his strengths and, ideally, help the team turn up its turnover generation.

Should all go to plan, there could be a big year for Blackmon on the way.
