Three Saints to watch at final open OTA practice

Greg M. Cooper

The final open practice of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) for the New Orleans Saints. It’s the final phase of the voluntary portion of the offseason, meaning it may offer the best last glance at some of the deeper names on the roster.

With that in mind, here are three players that are must-watches on Wednesday.

WR Ja’Lynn Polk

With star wideout Chris Olave not present for last week’s open session, if he continues to prepare for minicamp elsewhere, more opportunities will be afforded to Polk again this week.

The third-year wideout impressed during previous open practices and may have another chance to continue establishing himself this week. He’s in a hotly contested and very populated battle for what may be only one remaining wide receiver roster spot. Making the best of every opportunity is a must for the receiver.

CB Martin Emerson Jr.

The most recent veteran addition to the cornerback room, Emereon came up with an interception during the second week of OTAs off of a tip drill started by corner Isaac Yiadom. There doesn’t appear to be much competition yet for the starting cornerback roles with Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley (who have each looked strong) holding firm to those spots. But as more plays are made in practice, those conversations can get started.

DE Tyree Wilson

It’s always hard to get a read on how pass rushers are being viewed when there are no team drills or contact in these settings. But Wilson is always working. Drills, workouts, side work, conversations with players and staff. He doesn’t see a lot of downtime in practice, which appears to be a matter of his own creation. It’s a very promising habit to see from a player looking to take advantage of a new environment and opportunity to start fresh.

Seeing him continue this attentive approach and watching his dedication during drills and individual periods is becoming increasingly educational.

Wilson panning out could bring a major X-factor impact for New Orleans.
