What we hope to learn from third week of Saints OTAs

New Orleans Saints

The final week of Organized Team Activities (OTAs)  are here and the New Orleans Saints are set to take the field in front of the media for the last time until mandatory minicamp kicks off the following week.

With two weeks down and one week remaining in the voluntary period, here are some of the progress checks worth tracking.

TE Oscar Delp’s availability

The rookie tight end was observing during the second week of OTAs after presumably getting hurt during the first week. What his progress looks like in the third could raise alarm bells or calm concerns.

Head coach Kellen Moore will speak before practice, and can provide an update on his progress. Even if he does not participate much during the practice period, a clear indication of his status will be beneficial.

Update on Cameron Jordan

In speaking to Moore, expect questions about whether or not the Saints are any closer to finding a way to bring Jordan back to New Orleans.

Of course, Moore doesn’t deal with contracts and negotiations, but if there has been any significant progress in conversations, it’s not likely he’ll be out of the loop.

Days ago, defensive end Chase Young made an appearance on NFL Network, wherein he advocated for Jordan’s return.

How WR Jordyn Tyson is progressing

There is very little reason to rush Tyson into being involved in things like routes on air and 7-on-7s, in reality. However, progress would bring additional promise with the exciting rookie. Any steps forward would inspire some optimism. But continuing to focus on recovery from the collegiate injuries is likely the smarter path forward here.

Any new battle position rotations

With STAR/slot defender seemingly locked down with safety Jonas Sanker, the battle behind him to backup the position will be interesting to watch. Cornerback Jayden Price moved into second in the rotation last week. If he can maintain that role, a roster spot should be firmly in his view.

Backup center got a new competitor last week, second-year lineman Easton Kilty. He lined up behind Torricelli Simpkins II, who held the primary backup role. Kilty, though, wasn’t a part of the rotation during the media’s first viewing. So new contenders could continue to emerge.

Quarterback rep distribution

The Saints kept things even in each of the two practices previously opened to the media. During training camp, that’s likely to change with starter Tyler Shough set to dominate the rotation.
It will be interesting to see if Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson’s reps begin to throttle down now or if the Saints wait until minicamp to change distribution.
