A new suit and a steak work for most men.
That’s typically the deal LSU provides for the three players in tow for SEC Media Days every July. Last season, Garrett Nussmeier, Whit Weeks and Chris Hilton got the nod. This time, Lane Kiffin will be the draw. How he handles which players to bring will be new and interesting.
Some coaches bring seniors. Some coaches lean toward players they can trust to be…rather tight-lipped. Some coaches always bring quarterbacks. Some coaches shy away from transfers.
That said. Here are my three suggestions for LSU’s representatives which we should learn later this week.
Sam Leavitt, QB – Leavitt has never taken a snap at LSU and is coming off of an injury. Those two factors work against him. However, Kiffin raved about his work ethic and dedication to the game. Leavitt has experience in huge media scrums from his time in the College Football Playoff as a redshirt freshman. He’s the face of a pre-season top 15 team. I think he goes.
Ty Benefield, S – Benefield simply might be LSU’s best player. If that’s the case, the awards circuit awaits him prior to the NFL Draft. Boise State doesn’t quite generate the buzz that the SEC can if Benefield is afforded the chance to tell his story in Tampa.
Bo Bordelon, OG – Speaking of stories, Bordelon is a great one. He committed to Ed Orgeron, played for Brian Kelly and will finish with Kiffin. In four seasons at LSU, he’s started one game. He never transferred even as just about everyone in his position did this year. And he may have won the job in the spring over some really talented transfers. Bordelon did some media in the spring and comes across extremely polished as you’d expect from a fifth-year player.
This list leaves Whit Weeks out. I decided to do that based on the fact that he went last year and would probably field dozens of questions about his dating life. Those have all been answered in Baton Rouge.
Braelin Moore is certainly a possibility. He did a great job answering questions locally a season ago. Jordan Seaton is also a great quote and a big name. However, he would make three transfers if he joined Leavitt and Benefield in my scenario.
DJ Pickett is a big time name, but he hasn’t done much in the way of media.
I’ll stick with the signal caller, star and story for my trio.
