Kool-Aid McKinstry’s ankle injury minor, Saints to play it safe

After debuting with a strong day of training camp practice, New Orleans Saints cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry impressed again on day two. Unfortunately, it was a slightly abbreviated second day for the cornerback, who finished practice observing on the sideline.

The good news: head coach Kellen Moore said that the decision to keep the team’s No. 1 cornerback off the field to wrap up practice was nothing more than the team keeping with its cautious injury nature.

“I think he kind of just rolled his ankle a little bit,” Moore said after practice. “Just precautionary.”

Sources tell LouisianaSports.Net that the injury isn’t considered a major one, which was evidenced by his remaining on the sideline in good spirits watching the final set of team drills, and that no imaging will be needed.

However, the expectation is that the Saints will play it safe with McKinstry as the team returns to practice on Friday before the Saturday off. If the corner is limited or not seen at practice on Friday, it doesn’t sound like a situation that raises alarm bells. Instead, it’s another exercise in caution for New Orleans.

McKinstry had a pass breakup in the early goings of red zone 7-on-7 drills. After the play, he got up and ran a quick lap out of bounds as the second team took the field. That may have been the play where he first aggravated the ankle, but he did remain available and participated for the remainder of practice until the final sets of team work on the opposite side of the field.

In his place, cornerback Isaac Yiadom lined up opposite playmaking young corner Quincy Riley, who had camp’s first interception near the end of practice.
