After the first day of training camp for the New Orleans Saints, the vibes were high until news broke of an expected ACL tear for defensive tackle Bryan Bresee. After an opening day of watching some of the biggest names in camp, the second day will be built around watching some of the biggest bodies in camp to see how the interior defensive line shifts and changes after the devastating loss.
Among today’s three players to watch are a pair of defensive tackles that are sure to draw attention with a next man up opportunity ahead.
DT Christen Miller
The rookie defensive tackle has a real chance to be one of the most important players in the 2026 Saints draft class. His ability to change the numbers on the inside is going to be an integral part of the team’s ability to rush the passer and stop the run this year.
While he won’t be a one-for-one replacement of Bresee, as the two play different techniques in the interior, Miller does have the versatility to contribute consistently from multiple areas and will help to open up opportunities for players on the edge and next to him along the interior.
DT Nathan Shepherd
Shepherd is more likely to be the one-for-one replacement of Bresee as a 3-4 defensive end. It’s a role he’s played before tracking back to his New York Jets days. Against his former team last year, Shepherd displayed his ability to still be effective from the position. He’s likely to move into the first team reps originally held by Bresee.
WR Barion Brown
While all eyes were on fellow rookie wideout Jordyn Tyson, Brown had a quietly strong day to open camp. A couple of incompletions went his way, but he also reeled in an impressive diving catch and showcased his speed during individual drills.
While it’s still the acclimation period, it’s. It isn’t likely the Saints will be in a rush to start uncorking deep passes over the top. But with fans in attendance, some opportunities may arise. At which time, Brown’s deep speed could quickly become a part of the showcase.
