Fall Camp is underway across the SEC, so it’s time to get some overreactions and observations in. Your team is healthy, the schedule is manageable, and the amount of hope floating around the program is absolutely off the charts. Still, every team has some questions.
Here are three burning questions for every SEC team. Next up, Georgia.
1. Who will be the alpha in the wide receiver room?
Georgia’s success is never dependent on having an elite receiver, but it certainly helps. The Bulldogs have only had one 1,000 yard receiver in the last 25 years.
To put that in perspective, they’ve had double the amount of national championships in the last five years as the number of 1,000 yard receivers in the last 25 seasons. Anyone around the program would take that tradeoff any day of the week.
The receiver room on this year’s team is very talented. It’s also the biggest unknown. The Bulldogs lost several starters from last year’s team and brought in Isiah Canion from Georgia Tech.
The good news for Georgia is that the receiver room may not matter nearly as much as some of the others on the offense. They will not be heavily reliant on receivers in terms of offensive production thanks in part to a stable of running backs and the deepest tight end room in America.
2. Who will back up Gunner Stockton?
This may not seem important, but it is. It has nothing to do with Stockton or his ability. It’s because of the nature of playing that position in this league.
In the last two years, 13 of the 16 teams in the SEC have had their starting quarterback miss at least one game due to injury. Kirby Smart has stockpiled talent at quarterback, so the depth chart is elite. Stockton is also a very physical runner and gritty player. He’s tough as nails, but every QB takes their fair share of hits in this league. Stockton is no different.
You never want a player to get injured, but the track record for injuries over the last two years suggests that Georgia, and every other SEC team, will need to be prepared. It also shows just how few questions this year’s team has if that’s one of the three biggest heading into fall camp.
3. What will the offensive line look like?
The Bulldogs have arguably the best center in America in Drew Bobo. He didn’t allow a single sack last season in 254 pass blocking snaps and allowed just four pressures. The offensive line this year for Georgia should be one of the best in the country. There are questions on the right side of the unit, however.
The biggest question is who will start at right guard and right tackle. There are three players currently vying for the two roles. Sophomore Juan Gaston can play both spots, junior Jahzare Jackson at right tackle and freshman Zykie Helton at right guard.
Depth is never a bad thing on the offensive line in this league, and the Bulldogs have it in spades.
