LSU continued fall camp Saturday. The media viewing window featured mostly individual drills, giving us a look at several position groups before the Tigers moved into 7-on-7 work.
Sam Leavitt had a strong throwing period, while the quarterback pecking order, defensive line rotation and a potential change at STAR were among the other notable observations from practice.
The team was in shells today, meaning helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. Trey’Dez Green was dressed out but was sporting a gold non-contact jersey.
Sam Leavitt shines during throwing period
During our viewing period, the quarterbacks began by throwing to the tight ends as the receivers worked their own individual drills.
Green worked exclusively with Leavitt during this period. Malachi Thomas seems like the next man up at tight end, as he consistently ran second behind Green in drills.
Once the quarterbacks moved over with the receivers was when Leavitt started to shine.
They started with back-shoulder throws down the sideline, where Leavitt showed off some nice touch. Next up were slants, where Leavitt had a lot of zip on his throws and consistently put the ball on the money.
Finally came the deep ball as they switched to a deep play-action post. Leavitt’s touch, once again, stood out. Outside of one throw, his deep balls were excellent.
There were three incompletions charted for Leavitt during this period. He missed one back-shoulder throw that was overthrown, then had a slant dropped by Jayce Brown and later overthrew Brown on a deep post. Outside of that, he looked sharp.
Clear pecking order at quarterback
Right now, there seems to be a clear pecking order at quarterback.
Every drill featured Leavitt as QB1, followed by Husan Longstreet as the No. 2 and Landen Clark as the No. 3.
During this same period, the top three receivers in terms of who went in what order were consistently Brown, Jackson Harris and Malik Elzy.
Defensive line rotation
The defensive line worked bag drills with Deuce Geralds, Stephiylan Green, Richard Anderson, Dominick McKinley and Malik Blocton all toward the front of the line in terms of rotation.
Corey Raymond works with the cornerbacks
Raymond worked with the cornerbacks on hand placement during press coverage and body position against an outside release by a receiver.
Running backs focus on pass protection
Kevin Smith had the running backs primarily working on pass protection drills and how to identify where the blitz is coming from.
Dilin Jones appeared to go first in most of the individual drills.
What to keep an eye on
As we were leaving, the starting secondary trotted onto the field for some 7-on-7 work.
The corner spots were occupied by DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland, while the safety duo was Ty Benefield and Tamarcus Cooley. CJ Jimcoily worked with the first team at STAR. DaShawn Spears is the odds on starter there, but Blake Baker has liked what he’s seen from Jimcoily who is another imposing body in the secondary.
