The New Orleans Saints are set to host the Jacksonville Jaguars for a joint practice for Day 13 of training camp. The session will allow New Orleans to put its starters up against new talent from across the NFL, providing a measuring stick against which to track its progress.
The day should offer the Saints a chance to answer some of their biggest lingering questions from camp as the team’s starting unit (which isn’t likely to see much playing time in the preseason opener) gets a chance to work against a familiar opponent for the first time this offseason.
Here are three starters to watch with a shot to answer some burning questions.
QB Tyler Shough
Eyes have been on Saints starting quarterback Tyler Shough over the last few sessions and that’s not likely to change as the Jags come to town. The talented passer has been at the helm of an offense that’s seeking more consistency throughout camp thus far.
Going up against a new opponent and defensive system could be the jolt needed to find the consistency and playmaking the team is seeking.
The question of camp so far has been centered around whether or not the team’s offense is underwhelming or if the defense is outperforming the unit. This could be a day in which the offense gets to truly shine. Otherwise, it could be one that fortifies the questions and concerns outside the building.
EDGE Carl Granderson
Both top edge rushers Chase Young and Carl Granderson have been impressive throughout training camp. But Granderson, in particular, has been on a surge as of late.
In the three most recent practices he has piled up a number of pressures, at least two potential sacks, a pass breakup and interception.
Much like Shough, Granderson has a chance to prove what’s real and what’s a mirage by facing a new unit.
CB Kool-Aid McKinstry
Expectations remain sky-high around starting cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. The third-year defender has had a strong camp making a number of plays in the ball and reeling in a couple of interceptions.
Facing off with the Jaguars’ pass-catchers will offer a new proving ground for the cornerback to show that he’s taken his next step on Defensive Coordinator Brandon Staley’s system.
