The New Orleans Saints have named third-year passer Spencer Rattler as their starting quarterback for Saturday’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Head Coach Kellen Moore announced the decision following Thursday’s joint practice with Jacksonville, a day after he established that starters would not see much action during the preseason opener.
Instead, starting players saw a lot of work (Moore estimated 90-plus plays) on Thursday doing the combined practice session.
Rattler started the 2025 regular season as the team’s starting quarterback before then-rookie passer Tyler Shough eventually took over the role for the final nine games of the year.
With Shough now firmly implanted as the team’s starter going into the season, the path is open for Rattler to see a lot of opportunities and playing time during the preseason.
This training camp period has been a very positive one for Rattler, who has put up a number of highlight passes and built chemistry with many of the players with whom he will share the field during the upcoming exhibition matchup.
Rattler completed 67.7% of his passes for 1,586 passing yards and eight touchdowns passes to five interceptions in 2025. He also ran 31 times for 167 rushing yards.
He’ll get his first chance to start a matchup since Week 8 last year with a chance to build on the momentum he’s built throughout training camp.
Behind him, quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Hunter Dekkers will be in the wings awaiting their chance to take the field as well.
