LSU Practice Report: Key absences, QB update

Michael Bacigalupi

LSU held a full pads workout Monday morning at the Charles McClendon practice facility. The media was alloted two periods of individual viewing time, headlined by a few notable absences.

Harlem Berry was not present for Monday’s workout during the media viewing portion. The sophomore scored the first touchdown in Saturday’s scrimmage and is expected to shoulder an increased load alongside transfer Dilin Jones.

Several receivers appear to be on the mend. Jayce Brown and Winnie Watkins were both present and in white jerseys. Brown had been in a gold no-contact jersey last week while Watkins missed three workouts over the last two weeks. Freshman Jabari Mack is still in gold but participated fully.

Defensive lineman Malik Blocton and Jordan Ross were not seen during the media availability.

Ed Orgeron was also not seen during Monday’s workout. He has split his time between tackles and EDGE during camp.

During the pitch-and-catch portion of the workout, Sam Leavitt and Husan Longstreet took the lionshare of the reps with Landen Clark running third. Longstreet has clearly established himself as the No. 2 quarterback behind Leavitt.

It was an uneven day for Leavitt. The quarterbacks threw routes to tight ends and receivers against air and too many hit the ground. Leavitt missed both back shoulder throws to Trey’Dez Green and Zach Grace. He overthrew Tre Wilson on a Go route, underthrew Watkins and missed Phillip Wright wide on an out route.

Leavitt cleaned it up, hitting all four slants from the 30 yard line and was 3-for-3 in goal line throws, connecting with Watkins twice and Tyree Holloway.

Longstreet connected on all ten reps I charted.

The Tigers will work out again Tuesday evening as they continue alternating their day/night work.

Always the troll, Lane Kiffin was playing “Rocky Top” over the speakers as the media was exiting practice. The Tigers play Tennessee in Knoxville for the first time since 2017.

Scouts from several NFL teams were in attendance. Representatives from the Saints, 49ers, Giants, Packers, Raiders, Cardinals and Texans were present.
