The second preseason game of the New Orleans Saints season is on the way as the club braces for impact with the Los Angeles Rams.
Unlike their joint practice earlier in the week, starters are expected to be sidelined in this game. That leaves the action for the teams’ second and third team players who are all looking for an opportunity to impress.
Here are three Saints players with the most to gain in their next exhibition season opportunity.
QB Zach Wilson
The veteran quarterback came out of last week’s matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars as one of the biggest winners of the weekend.
Now, Wilson’s chance to further the conversation at backup quarterback against previous starter Spencer Rattler has never been more achievable.
With another strong performance against Los Angeles, the chatter around the QB2 battle has a chance to reach a fever pitch.
RB Kendre Miller
After spending much of training camp injured, running back Kendre Miller is back in the mix.
He’s impressed since his return to action during the Saints’ recent joint practices. Now, he’s got an opportunity, with Alvin Kamara and Audric Estime managing injuries.
This will be Miller’s first game action since his Week 7 season-ending ACL tear against the Chicago Bears last year.
Should he put up a strong performance against the Rams, he could re-enter the conversation for the team’s third running back spot with a renewed fervor.
K Tanner Brown
After hitting field goals from 29 and 49 yards out in the previous preseason game, kicker Tanner Brown and incumbent Charlie Smyth haven’t kicked in practice in front of the media since.
Should Brown take advantage of the light week on Saturday with another perfect day kicking, there could finally be some separation in the battle.
However, if he doesn’t close the door while he has a chance, Smyth has every bit of opportunity and potential to take the reins himself.
