It’s time. It’s game week, and that means it’s time to partake in one of my (least) favorite weekly fall traditions – getting yelled at on social media because of my weekly SEC power rankings. Let’s get right to it. Here are the official power rankings for the SEC to start the 2026 season.
Bottom Six
16. Arkansas
15. Vanderbilt
14. Kentucky
13. Mississippi State
12. Florida
11. Missouri
Top Ten
10. Auburn
First year coach Alex Golesh has some great pieces in place for Year 1. He nailed the retention part of the staff by keeping DJ Durkin and Byrum Brown. There are definitely questions on offense at receiver and the offensive line, but Auburn has a chance to surprise some people in year one of the Golesh era.
9. Tennessee
It will be boom or bust for Tennessee this year. Their success isn’t solely dependent on who they start at quarterback, but making sure a freshman quarterback can limit mistakes is never easy in this conference. If the defense can improve enough under Jim Knowles, it could mean a trip to the College Football Playoff.
8. Alabama
Everyone keeps talking about the quarterback battle being the biggest concern of this year’s team in Tuscaloosa. However, that’s wrong. It’s the depth they have, or don’t have rather, in the trenches. Alabama got gashed at times last year against the run. They’ll need to find a way to limit that despite losing all their best pieces up front. Injuries have mounted during fall camp, and that’s never a good sign going into a portion of the season where everyone is usually at their healthiest.
7. South Carolina
Everyone seems to be catching on to the South Carolina hype after the summer and fall camp. The Gamecocks have some elite, freak athletes on both sides of the ball. And, they have them at the most important positions on the field, as well. Can they finally piece together a full season that resembles the final six games of 2024? I think so.
6. Texas A&M
The Aggies have an incredibly manageable schedule for the first two months of the season. The final month is brutal. They are one of three teams with a three-year starter at quarterback, though. The defense should reload, and they could easily find themselves back in the CFP. The concerns however, are still pretty big. They have to replace an offensive coordinator, a first-round pick at wide receiver, the league’s best pass rusher, and four starters off what was the most experienced offensive line in America a season ago.
5. Ole Miss
How far can the best quarterback and running back tandem take a team? We are about to find out. Trinidad Chambliss getting another year in college is fantastic news for everyone. Kewan Lacy is electric. The schedule is brutal, but Pete Golding won SEC Media Days, and the Rebels are trending in the right direction, and just so we are clear, the rest of the roster is absolutely loaded as well. It will be a really interesting year in Oxford for a team that could become every casual fan’s favorite program all season long.
4. Oklahoma
What a difference a year makes. Last year, Brent Venables was on the hot seat. This year, he has a Top 10 team that is one of the favorites to return to the CFP. John Mateer is another three-year starter at quarterback, but this will be his second year starting in the SEC. How much of a jump can he make in Year 2 in this league? The defense should be absolutely elite once again, and the schedule is manageable with only two of their toughest games away from Norman.
3. LSU
They’re going to have to earn their way into the College Football Playoff and out of the doghouse for most college football fans around the country. But, make no mistake about it, this is one of the most talented teams in the country. Can the offensive line gel fast enough to protect Sam Leavitt, and can the youth on the defensive line hold their own against grown men they’ll be facing on each snap? Those are the biggest questions for LSU, but there aren’t many others outside of that.
2. Texas
Texas has the most talented roster in the conference, and it’s not really close. That doesn’t mean they’re the best team, though. There are weapons everywhere, and the Longhorns finally have an offensive line with experience like the one they ran behind in 2024. The schedule is brutal, but the roster is made to win and win a lot. Unlike last year, the offense should hit the ground running this year right from jump.
1. Georgia
The least pretty crown wearer in the country, the Georgia Bulldogs. They are going to bludgeon people this year. Kirby Smart said at Media Days, “The same things that win games haven’t changed.”
They’re going to play great defense. They’re going to run the football. And, they’re almost certainly going to be back in Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game for the ninth time in ten years.
