News broke on Thursday that the college football playoff is nearing an expansion to 24 teams.
The news itself shouldn’t be a surprise since college football has been barreling down this path for a while now. The reaction from fans wasn’t a surprise either, as the decision was met with anger and frustration from all over.
After the news broke social media was set ablaze. Here were a few of our favorite reactions.
I'm planting my flag atop this hill and I'm not budging.

The 24-team College Football Playoff is awesome!
And I'm here to stand in opposition to decades of gaslighting leading fans to believe an acutal playoff would ruin the "sacred" regular season when the exact opposite is…

Here is what a 24-team College Football Playoff would have looked like in 2025, with two rounds of on-campus games:https://t.co/Mqdv5K2Uar https://t.co/rT4uYFRfMF pic.twitter.com/QnrkaZxDoJ

"If we go to 14, to 16, to 24 [teams] you're watering down the significance and the importance of the regular season."

It's not that there aren't positives to 24-team expansion. Two full rounds of playoff games on campus will be awesome.

But the negatives — a major devaluing of the regular season being the main one — outweigh them considerably, to me.
I guess id also just rather see or watch, say A Missouri vs SMU 1st round playoff game on a campus instead of Missouri vs Nebraska in the ReliaQuest bowl with 10 starters sitting out already in the transfer portal

Other than the regular season games becoming meaningless, a majority of FBS still not having meaningful playoff access, conference championship games getting axed, bowls losing relevance, and increased player injury risk, the expansion to 24 teams could be a good thing.

You know what REALLY sucks about my timeline of College Football diehards complaining about the expansion to 24 teams?

The decision-makers don't give a damn; they are kicking their feet up today, counting dollar bills, laughing at the people who built this sport.
Greg Sankey asked if the SEC is open to 24-team Playoff:

"I've always communicated that we've never said no, that won't happen, that won't be a point of support."
"There is an openness to Playoff expansion on our part.

The first round CFP game between JMU and Oregon drew the exact same rating as New Mexico vs Minnesota in the Rate Bowl on December 26th

The people in charge of college football just killed the regular season to create a few more C-Tier games

I can’t believe a political candidate has not put stopping CFP expansion on their platform. I haven’t seen our country agree like this in over a decade
— Graham Coffey (@GrahamCoffeyDC) October 16, 2026
If I am a congressional candidate I’m telling voters that I’ll stop CFP expansion by amending the Protect College Sports Act

I didn't need it.
I don't particularly want it.
I don't think this is some existential crisis for the sport.
I don't think this kills the regular season. The regular season you fear you're losing has been…
