Shough playing with broken bones in left hand

It has been speculated for a while that New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough may have been playing through a serious injury to his left hand. That speculation was confirmed Sunday morning ahead of the team’s Week 6 matchup with the New York Giants.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints’ starting passer has two broken bones in his non-throwing hand.

The injury took place early in the Saints’ Week 4 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and Shough played through it with a gloved and heavily-wrapped left hand against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.

The injury is bad enough that Shough was forced to execute handoffs with his right hand, regardless of run direction. He also was not using the hand to brace himself when going to the ground nor did he use it to steady himself working to stand up.

Shough told the local media that he does not expect the hand injury to impact his performance, being that his throwing hand is fine.

The speculation around the injury picked I’m when Shough and Head Coach Kellen Moore denied the opportunity to clarify the injury. Any answer but “no” when asked whether the hand was broken was going to indicate that it indeed was. Schefter’s report confirms that suspicion.

The quarterback plans to continue playing through the injury and is prepared to start Week 6 against the Giants.
