Although he may not make his debut this weekend against the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is closing on finally playing for the team after a lengthy recovery process.
Tyson has been off of the field for New Orleans throughout the season since suffering a hamstring injury, one that he referred to as a contact injury, during a joint practice against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 13.
The months-long recovery process is one that’s made Tyson anxious for his return to football action after the Saints were patient and took a very cautious road to getting him back.
“Pretty anxious for sure,” Tyson said. “Just trying to get out there, catch the ball, catch touchdowns, that’d be real nice to be out there with my teammates. Go through what they go through; the grind of it. Staying positive, just kind of being a pro. I’m excited for it.”
Tyson has suffered a number of injuries on his way to an NFL roster, but has now had enough time to rest and get ready to contribute. The Saints are very excited about the No. 8 overall selection and have clearly taken an approach more focused on maximizing his return.
Because of that method, Tyson feels confident heading into his return, whether it happens this week or in the near future.
“Just been trying to get back right,” he said. “Trying to rehab, build my foundation up so we can come back and have no problems.”
Tyson’s former wide receiver coach and NFL great Hines Ward was in agreement after having conversations with Tyson in recent days.
“More than anything, I think he’s finally healthy,” said Ward. “It’s been a long journey. Had the hamstring, was trying to prep and trying to get ready for the draft and ended up hurting it again. It is what it is. That’s a part of football, injuries are that. I just wanted to be there, see him making his first NFL catch. Right when he makes that catch, I’ll shoot him a text and tell him I love him. He’s going to be a good one.”
That closing sentiment is echoed throughout the Saints facility. Everyone is high on the young playmaker and looks forward to what he’ll be able to bring to the team. That includes Tyson, who has high expectations of himself.
“I think receivers, we’re just supposed to be playmakers,” he said. “Got to make plays, make plays that we’re not supposed to make, make plays that we’re supposed to make. Trying to be as explosive as I can.”
