Did we just watch the greatest college football weekend ever?

What. Just. Happened?

I brought this up earlier this week in my weekly Winning & Boozing article on the site, but every time it seems like we are in for a “down” weekend or a “bad slate” of games, we get the most unexpected weekend imaginable. Saturday was no different.

Here’s a look at some of the things that happened in week six:

  • Seven total Top 25 teams lost

  • Five of the top 11 teams in the country lost

  • Four top 11 teams lost to unranked teams

  • Two top five SEC teams lost to unranked teams for the first time in conference history

  • No. 1 Alabama lost to Vanderbilt

Oh, and out on the west coast? We bookended the day with a kid winning $100,000 by hitting a 43-yard field goal at breakfast, and then watched Miami come back from down 38-10 to win for a night cap.

What a damn day!

People love to talk about 2007 as the greatest season in the history of college football. That was a season where we watched the first two-loss national champions be crowned since (insert fake claimed Alabama national title here), and we also watched the No. 2 team in the country lose nine consecutive weeks.

I don’t know if this is 2007 Part Two. I do know that this is the sixth week of the season, and it’s the sixth straight week, at least in the SEC, where we’ve seen a lopsided favorite lose outright to an underdog. I do know it’s the first time since 1984 that Vanderbilt beat Alabama. And, I do know that this is also the first year of a twelve team playoff.

So, again, I don’t know if this is 2007 part two because through six weeks of the season, it may be even better.
