SEC officiating has been a focal point, and unforeseen rallying cry, for SEC fans and their anger all season. Saturday night, with the eyes of the nation watching, it felt like it finally came to a head.
Late in the third quarter, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw an interception on third down that was returned inside the ten yard line, potentially setting up Texas with an opportunity to pull within one score late in Austin.
However, the interception was overturned because of what appeared to be a questionable call. Texas fans began throwing bottles and trash on the field in response, causing a delay in the action. Once officials and security were able to quell the issue, they announced that the call was overturned after a meeting of minds during the delay.
Kirby Smart was outraged. Georgia was outraged. Fans everywhere seemed outraged as well. Smart went so far as to say that “they tried to rob us” in his postgame interview.
