Texas A&M is great on the offensive glass. LSU struggles on offense.
Those two identities had been true for 17 games, and they very much held Saturday in the regular season finale. A&M took over the paint and smothered the Tigers’ offense to win 66-52 on Senior Day at the Maravich Center.
Scoring droughts were the story throughout.
LSU had just one field goal from the 18:17 mark of the first half to the 12 minute mark, over six minutes. Then Texas A&M went 6:14 without a point which allowed LSU a 17-0 run to take a seven-point lead.
LSU held the Aggies off the rest of the first half and got to the break up two.
After halftime, LSU’s offense stalled as it has often times throughout the conference season. Texas A&M’s defense feasted on it. The Aggies went on a 10-0 run to take the lead by eight and then a 9-0 run to stretch that lead to 16.
Ultimately the Aggies won it by 14.
In his final game in the Maravich Center, Cam Carter struggled. That’s a harbinger of bad, bad things for the LSU offense. Carter made two of his 12 shots and scored just seven points, tying his second lowest output all season. He scored seven against Florida. LSU lost by 14. He scored four against Texas. LSU lost by 31.
A&M’s physically pummeled an undermanned Tiger team.
Robert Miller III and Daimion Collins both fouled out in the frontcourt. Texas A&M won the glass 42-27 including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points.
That’s the Aggie identity.
The Tigers ultimately lost the second half by 16 points as the home team wore down.
LSU heads to Nashville as the No. 15 seed in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers finished league play 3-15.
