The first month of the college baseball season feels like a metaphor for midweek games. Sure, there are some great matchups and early season tournaments featuring ranked on ranked matchups and notable Power Four programs squaring off, but for the most part it’s a preseason
Here’s what to watch this weekend as SEC play gets underway.
Pray for Missouri
There’s a ton of bad weather headed towards the SEC states this weekend. To be clear, none of those storm cells and potential tornadoes are supposed to reach Missouri. The prayers aren’t for safety. The prayers are because they open SEC play with LSU.

Missouri might be one of the worst teams in the SEC over the last decade. They’re the only team who enters SEC play without a winning record. The only team! It’s going to be a long weekend for Mizzou.
Out with the old in with the new
Historically speaking, Mississippi State and South Carolina are two of the best baseball programs in the history of this conference. It’s been over a decade since South Carolina won a national title in Omaha. It’s been four years since Mississippi State did the same. Regardless, one of the more intriguing storylines of this weeknd are the new bloods coming into the conference competing with the blue bloods of the SEC.
Oklahoma travels to South Carolina and Texas will play their inaugural SEC weekend series at Dudy Noble in Starkville. The road teams, and conference newcomers, are favored to win both series. We’ll see if State and South Carolina have enough to change that.

Tennessee and Florida set to deliver once again
It’s wild that Tennessee and Florida seem to be a top ten matchup in every sport these days. Well, not football anymore, but in basketball and baseball it continues to be one of the best rivalries in each sport. Florida heads to Knoxville this weekend to play the defending national champs in hopes of ending their perfect season.
Coming into this week there were only two undefeated teams left in college baseball, Florida State and Tennessee. Florida already ended that streak for the Seminoles. Now they’ll look to not only do the same in Knoxville, but also win a series against what might be the best team in America, again.

The Battle for preseason confirmation bias
Alabama and Texas A&M face off in College Station. It’s not the most exciting series of the weekend, nor does it have the most national implications. However, it’s an interesting case study in how real confirmation bias and preseason expectations were before the season started. Texas A&M lost in the national title best of three in Omaha. Then, they lost their coach. Granted, they did return a ton of talent, especially offensively. That being said, it was a little ridiculous to have them be a unanimous pick as preseason No. 1. Alabama came into the season the same way they have the last several seasons – a fringe top 25 team with hopes of just making the postseason.
Fast forward to now and Alabama is 16-1 with arguably the best player in America, Justin Lebron. The Aggies are just 9-6. It should be a good one in Blue Bell Park this weekend.
