Saints’ Alontae Taylor primed for key role in Staley’s defense

The defensive side of the football is expected to see a lot of change this offseason for the New Orleans Saints. Some new faces on the roster highlight personnel moves, like the additions of safety Justin Reid and defensive tackle Davon Godchaux. But the majority of change will be seen with an all-new coaching staff and defensive system led by defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. 

Staley’s defense, which stands to implement more odd-numbers fronts, will also offer some exciting opportunities for the team’s secondary. The pattern-matching coverage scheme should fit certain players like cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry extremely well. But it’s the inclusion of the “STAR” role that could be most beneficial for cornerback Alontae Taylor. 

Early last season, Taylor’s game had taken a big step forward from the slot. He was noted as one of the most disruptive players because of his contributions which included:

• 16 passes defended
• 4 sacks
• 7 tackles for a loss
• 2 forced fumbles
• 6 quarterback hits

Before Taylor was moved back outside, following the trade of Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders and now-departed corner Paulson Adebo’s season-ending injury, Taylor was wracking up his reputation as a playmaker. 

Unfortunately for the young corner, the same obstacle that hindered his development as a rookie and second-year player resurfaced in 2024: inconsistent playing time.

When Taylor started his career hot on the outside, he was moved into the slot. After facing challenges in that role during his second year in the league, he fully embraced the position change before 2024—only to have his responsibilities shift again midseason.

In Staley’s system, Taylor should have a carved out spot that matches his aggressive and disruptive style of play. The “STAR” role should put Taylor back where he proved he could be comfortable and productive early last season.
