As the New Orleans Saints get closer to kicking off their season, underrated and X-factor players that can make a difference in 2025 will begin to come into focus. Each year, some contributor comes from either an unexpected young player or a veteran that many may assume is ready to take a step back.
With that, underappreciated players often sit to the forefront as difference-makers. NFL.com named tight end Foster Moreau as their underappreciated Saints player this year, a selection with which we vehemently agree.
We wanted to take a look at some additional options beyond the former LSU Tiger who is sure to have an impact once recovered fully from his injury.
LB Nephi Sewell
Special teams doesn’t get enough shine as it is, but even outside of that, Sewell’s development as a strongside linebacker has been fun to watch. He’s a tenacious player with an impressive motor and a real desire to be in every play. He’s aggressive and always finds a way to get to the ball when given opportunities in defense. While all eyes are currently on rookie Danny Stutsman to force his way on the field, watch for Sewell to do the same.
Add in his special teams contributions and Sewell is a near lock to make the roster again, as long as he stays healthy.

OL Landon Young
Young is one of the smartest players on the roster. Now that he’s cross-trained across the line and can play both tackle and guard spots, his re-signing with the team was no surprise. New Orleans bolstered its top-end protection unit with the selection of tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. in this year’s draft and the transition of last year’s right tackle Trevor Penning to left guard. Now, building depth becomes crucial. Along with the addition of Dillon Radunz and return of Will Clapp Jr., Young gives the team a solid one through eight on the offensive line with a lot of versatility.
DT Khalen Saunders
When he was added as a free agent back in 2022, the expectations were high for the incredibly athletic defensive tackle. Unfortunately, he’s been a part of a scheme and led by a staff that didn’t get the most of his entire unit. That could change this year under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.
Saunders can now contribute as a nose tackle in addition to rotating along the defensive line, giving him a chance to attack from multiple angles and play numerous roles that can help keep an offensive line off balance. In addition, what goes unseen to most of the public is Saunders’ impact in practices and in the locker room. He’s an energy source for his team, constantly challenging for more from and celebrating the best of his club.
