After signing veteran running back Cam Akers on Friday, the running back competition is heating up for the New Orleans Saints.
The starter is set in star back Alvin Kamara, but the room behind him is crowded.
Saints Running Backs Behind Kamara
- Cam Akers
- Clyde Edwards-Helaire
- Kendre Miller
- Devin Neal
- Velus Jones Jr.
- Xazavian Valladay
- Marcus Yarns
New Orleans has carried three running backs, plus a fullback in the past, while also having tight end Taysom Hill contribute to the rushing attack.
This year, however, there’s no fullback on the roster. That could open the door for three more backs to make the roster behind Kamara.
The run game is one of the biggest mysteries so far for the team, though a more diverse attack than last season is certainly expected. But without full team drills during OTAs and minicamp, the competition making these rushers will have to wait for training camp in July.
The Favorites
Akers adds to the crowd of the backfield but will be fighting for his potential spot even as a recent addition. Miller is being looked to as a potential breakout player and Edwards-Helaire has a unique motivation to land a spot again with his home-state team.
The Young Challengers
Meanwhile, rookie back Neal was selected in the draft by this coaching staff, providing a positive outlook for his potential.
Those are the backs likely to be considered the favorites in the conversation, but Jones, Valladay, and Yarns are all set to make compelling cases.
This will be a very intriguing battle to watch throughout camp and to watch develop over the course of the season.
