The New Orleans Saints currently have just 89 players on their 90-man roster, including second-round pick and quarterback Tyler Shough who is among those across the league to not have their rookie contract completed just yet.
New Orleans has been connected to a few free agent names over the last few weeks, giving them some options when it comes to filling out that final spot on the roster.
Defensive Tackle Jonathan Bullard
The fantastic interior run stopper could help the Saints on the defensive line. The unit could use some more fresh options in order to keep shaking things up with the new defensive scheme of Brandon Staley. Bullard and Staley also have some familiarity from previous stops.
Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.
New Orleans could continue to look for more options at cornerback. Another familiar face for Staley could be looking to land back with him. Samuel had a neck procedure this offseason, but is expected to get a medical re-check in July. At which time, if all looks good, the competition in the Saints’ cornerbacks room could see another addition.
Wide Receiver Gabe Davis
The 6-foot-2 wideout doesn’t necessarily check the box as a receiver bigger than what the Saints already have in the room. But his 225 pound frame and great blocking abilities could certainly be of use for New Orleans. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill recently cited sources on a Locked On Saints Podcast appearance that Davis may not be available until October.
But if the Saints are interested, they could sign him soon, start his season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and then work him in once cleared to participate.
The Saints have shown interest with a reported visit for the receiver.
