Baseball season ended a long time ago for most teams in the country and the SEC. That’s not the experience for LSU.
Players returned home Monday, my coworkers arrive today, and on Wednesday, they’ll be joined by countless Tiger fans at Alex Box Stadium to celebrate the newest addition to the trophy case.
Now the question is: can they win another in a different sport the same year?
Simply put, yes.
LSU has won four national titles in the last six years across three different sports. They head into football season with a consensus top ten team, and have arguably the most talented team under Brian Kelly since he arrived in Baton Rouge. The blueprint for football has been the same for other sports across the landscape for LSU – acquire talent and acquire as much of it as possible.
That’s what makes so many Tiger teams dangerous heading into their next season. LSU’s football team finished with a top ten recruiting class and a top two class in the transfer portal. The portal class saw 18 newcomers sign with the Tigers and half of those were ranked in the top 100 nationally for transfer portal players, including four in the top 25.
Then, there’s basketball. The women’s team came up just shy of the Final Four. However, they return Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams. They also signed the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the country, which includes three five stars.
The men’s team was abysmal last year, but in a somewhat surprising move, Scott Woodward not only kept Matt McMahon as head coach but also invested heavily in the program. LSU added seven players through the transfer portal, including four four-star prospects. Among them was former UNLV guard Dedan Thomas, the No. 6 ranked point guard available. They finished with the No. 16 ranked class in the portal.
Then there’s everything else, and while that might sound like an afterthought, at LSU, it’s anything but. At one point this spring, eight Tiger teams were ranked in the national top 10, including golf, track and field, and women’s softball. All were consistently ranked in the top ten throughout their entire seasons.
So, can LSU win another national title in the same year? Yeah. It would be just another LSU thing.
