Al Ott, a halfback on LSU’s 1958 national championship team, died Sunday. He was 86.
His son and longtime radio personality Jimmy Ott shared the news on his Facebook page.
The 1958 Tigers featured Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon and finished 11-0 to win the school’s first football national title.
Ott, a Gretna, La. native, was a longtime coach in the New Orleans area. Among his pupils were former NBA player and coach Robert Pack who spoke about Ott in a 2018 blog post, “Coach Ott was a masterful coach that infused discipline and challenged me to perform at my absolute best at such a young age. He played an integral role with grooming me for high school hoops.”
Services will be held Monday, July 7, at Mothe’s Funeral Home in Harvey, La. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with Catholic Mass to follow.
