After bringing in an 11-player class this offseason, the New Orleans Saints expect a lot of competition from their undrafted rookies. Many players have intriguing talent and versatile skillsets. Some also have more direct paths to the roster than others because of their position.
One player that checks both boxes is former Wake Forest edge rusher Jasheen Davis.
Davis finished his career third in school history with 25.5 career sacks and second in career tackles for a loss with an eye-popping 51.
Beyond the awe-inspiring numbers, Davis measures in with NFL size at 6-foot-3 and 270 pounds. The edge rusher’s speed flashes consistently on his game tape, as well.
EDGE Competition Will Heat Up Quickly
He will be competing at a position that could use another rotational piece. Behind established rushers Chase Young, Carl Granderson and Cameron Jordan, the Saints don’t have a solid answer for their rotational needs.
However, they do have options. Alongside Davis, the team could look to third-year edge rusher Isaiah Foskey, who should fit more comfortably in defensive coordinator Brandon Staley’s defensive scheme, fellow rookie Fadil Diggs and veteran Chris Rumph II.
The team also classifies both Jonah Williams and Omari Thomas as defensive ends, but they may be more-so utilized as 3-4 defensive ends rather than standup edge rushers.
What Separates Davis
Davis is uniquely equipped to man either end role. But with his athleticism and ability to get after the quarterback, allowing him to stand up and rush might be a welcome change from his collegiate days.
One of the most important areas where the Wake Forest alum excels that will be most beneficial for New Orleans is his ability to finish plays at the quarterback. When he gets to the passer, he’s shown a knack for making the play, something that has been an issue for New Orleans in recent years.
He also has shown a collection of pass rushing moves, displaying some polish in his game as he enters the league. Davis gives a little more than the typical undrafted canvas for his coaching staff. And he does so at a position where there are currently more questions and roster spots than answers. That’s good news for the impressive rookie who is looking to impress come training camp.
“Looking at their depth chart,” Davis said in an exclusive interview with 104.5 ESPN Radio Baton Rouge. “I feel like I have an opportunity to come in and make a name for myself.”
