There were questions whether or not Ethan Frey would return to LSU.
He will not.
Frey was taken in the third round, No. 95 overall, by the Houston Astros on Sunday night.
Frey couldn’t find a spot in the loaded 2023 LSU lineup as a true freshman and then tore his labrum early in 2024. That hampered him significantly, but he elected to play through it to try to help a foundering SEC team.
After offseason surgery, Frey exploded in 2024. He hit .331 with 13 home runs, both were second best on the team. He scored six runs in Omaha which led the team.
Frey will have to improve his defense in the professional ranks. That’s something he wasn’t able to do as a designated hitter on the national title squad. He’s 6-foot-6 and can really run which is a good start to outfield defense.
The bat is the tool that will carry Frey professionally. Slot value at No. 95 is $803,900.
LSU returns Derek Curiel and Jake Brown in the outfield with Chris Stanfield having a draft decision to make.
