As the Saints’ biggest free agency acquisition of the 2024 season and the most expensive offseason move of the 2025 offseason, defensive end Chase Young will have all eyes on him during the team’s 2025 training camp.
After agreeing to a three-year, $51 million contract extension this summer, Young will be the feature pass rusher for the Saints’ foreseeable future. He’ll be working alongside edge rushers Carl Granderson and Cameron Jordan and some young players that are looking to step up in the team’s new defense, led by newly-appointed defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.
Staley’s 3-4 scheme should play into the strengths of Young by utilizing him more as a standup pressure player off the edge.
Throughout training camp, Young has a chance to showcase how Staley’s new scheme will impact him.
Only so much will be able to be fleshed out throughout the non-contact practices. Unlike OTAs and minicamp, pads and team drills will help onlookers see how things will take shape.
Young finished No. 6 in the NFL with 73 pressures last year, per Next Gen Stats. However, he only wrangled 5.5 sacks. Staley’s attacking scheme and philosophy could help that sack number skyrocket in 2025. All of that work will begin in late July as training camp gets started.
