Training camp injuries happen, but for the New Orleans Saints, it took a lot longer than usual to see the first one. Last year, it felt like someone went down at every Saints practice, starting on day one, when running back Kendre Miller suffered an injury that sidelined him for all of training camp and the start of the season.
This year, under new head coach Kellen Moore and director of sports performance Ted Rath, it took until the fifth day to see a player leave the field.
Saints safety J.T. Gray left practice early on Monday after slipping in the field during a special teams drill.
J.T. Gray left practice early. Appeared to slip during a special teams session. It’s a lower body injury. He will be evaluated. Kellen Moore said he doesn’t think it’s anything bad though.

Following the practice, Moore updated that the injury will be further evaluated but there wasn’t much immediate concern for a long-term situation.
“We’ll just evaluate it,” he said “I don’t think anything too bad.”
The injury was initially indicated as a lower body injury, but Moore added the additional context on Tuesday that it was a hamstring injury. Moore did say that the return timeline will be more week-to-week than long term, which is a positive sign. Gray was present for Tuesday’s walkthrough.
The four-time captain has a chance to complete his all-gold captain’s badge this year and it’s hard not to expect that to be the case. This injury will open up opportunities for other players to showcase their skill set on defensive and special teams drills, but sounds unlikely to cost Gray much time and no loss of standing in his role.
Look for UFL standout Jayden Price to be among the special teams options to see more time at gunner while Gray is managing the injury. Meanwhile, undrafted free agent rookie safety Elliott Davison is likely to see a bump in defensive snaps unless Gray makes it back sooner than later.
