METAIRIE, La. — For the first time in New Orleans Saints training camp, second-year quarterback SPencer Rattler saw third team work. It doesn’t feel particularly indicative of Rattler’s standing in the quarterback competition, in which he is widely believed to be in the lead. Instead, based on the say’s work, it makes sense.
On Saturday, the Saints focused on a lot of situational work, including four-minute drills and pinned back situations starting at their own two yard-line.
If there was a day to get Rattler with the third team, this was it. Both rookie Tyler Shough and third-year passer Jake Haener have less pro game experience, having them with the first and second teams respectively gave them more potential for additional reps working those situations.
Head coach Kellen Moore said before camp not to read into who sees reps with which teams. However, Rattler not seeing third team reps until camp day nine feels notable.
#Saints QB rotation so far (1-2-3):
Day 1: Rattler, Shough, Haener
2: Shough, Rattler, Haener
3: Haener, Rattler, Shough
4: Rattler, Shough, Haener
5: Shough, Rattler, Haener
6: Walkthru
7: Haener, Rattler, Shough
8: Rattler, Shough, Haener
9: Shough, Haener, Rattler— John Sigler (@john_siglerr) August 2, 2025
The most intriguing element of team reps becomes Sunday’s practice. Moore announced that the team would be doing scrimmage work in this tempo with a chance to go live later in the day.
Based on the previous rotations, Haener is up next. But focusing scrimmage first team reps with all three quarterbacks may also be an option.
