It was an eventful day on Airline Drive as the New Orleans Saints underwent their first scrimmaged practice in years.
Kellen Moore has made it a point to start shifting focuses throughout camp from scripted plays to call-it situations. On Sunday, he and the Saints drove that forward by doing an entirely unscripted practice in front of fans.
The team ran a whopping 126 offensive plays on the day over 18 series of team drills.
Spencer Rattler saw six series, Tyler Shough had eight and Jake Haener finished with four.
“It was an awesome practice today,” Moore said following the busy day. “Awesome scrimmage, we ran a ton of plays. We ran 126 plays so we might have broke a record. But that’s all good, games are three hours long. So it was a good acclimation for us in general.”
After having time to add up all of the reps, the Saints put a huge focus on passing plays in general. Not including special teams reps, penalties and other no-play situations, the trio of Saints quarterbacks attempted 89 passes by our charting. That leaves only 37 reps for the run game.
This was a pass-heavy outing for the Saints offense and defense. From it came one passing touchdown between Shough and tight end Michael Jacobson, two interceptions and several pass breakups. There were several big plays as well.
It was Shough’s strongest day as he has become more aggressive and takes more chances.

For both sides of the football, this practice was a much-needed crescendo as the foundational install on offense and defense nears its end.
The Saints will have Monday off before returning to practice Tuesday in Metairie, La. That will be the team’s final practice before they head to Irvine, Calif. for the rest of their camp and their preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
